Fabrica vitae touring exhibition Zakynthos

4-8 Sept 2014

A touring exhibition about the fabric of life inspired by Andreas Vesalius 1514-1564. The intention of the touring exhibition is to question what we consider the role of Art and Anatomy to be in this modern world. The work reflects how contemporary artists, scientists and thinkers perceive the human body and how the future of anatomical research is seen to be unfolding. Vesalius would be at the forefront of this exploration, if he were alive today, and the exhibition wishes to evoke his spirit in pushing the barriers of thought as wide open as he would undoubtedly insist. Fabrica Vitae will have it’s grand opening during the conference “Vesalius Continuum” Commemorating the 500th anniversary of Andreas Vesalius.

DIGITAL11: The Alchemy of Change

Art & Science Collaboration's 13th international digital print exhibition at the New York Hall of Science

The “art & technology” movement that began in small pockets around the world in the mid-late 1960's, has now become mainstreamed into the global art world, creating many new fine art [digital] genres. Art-science practice is relatively new. Here you will find artists that have had a deep-seated passion for science most of their lives. Some of them even received advanced educational degrees in science before switching to the arts. Simultaneously, with the aid of leading-edge technologies, today's scientific discoveries not only astound us, but promise to help solve many of our pressing environmental and human health crisies. The import of science is undeniable. And since artists have always reflected “the times,” art inspired by science is a natural for the beginning of the 21 As part of the Introduction to this year's international digital print competition, ASCI's Director, Cynthia Pannucci, set the challenge for this year's exhibition – “If you extend your imagination beyond the epithelial surface of your body, or into the ether that carries cosmic dust, or even into your kitchen, chemistry can inspire wonder. Like a fabulous menu of concocted primordial soups, when exposed to changes in temperature, pressure, or speed, chemistry can create a stick of dynamite or a magnificent souffle!” Digital2011 was designed to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry by showing us how both artists and scientists view this deeply fundamental, magical enabler of life called chemistry.

ART & SCIENCE - Merging Art & Science to Make a Revolutionary New Art Movement

Science is changing our world and our lives at an ever increasing rate. But today artists are bringing science out of the laboratory. Once art and science seemed diametrically opposite; but these days some of the most innovative artists are fusing art and science to create a brand new art movement inspired by science. Striving to visualise the invisible and what it must mean to be human in the future, they create images and objects of stunning beauty, redefining the notion of aesthetic and of what is meant by art.

These days the term ‘art and science’ is on everyone’s lips - but no one quite knows what it is or where it is going. Does it mark the rise of a new culture in which science and technology will be the driving forces and will even perhaps determine the future of culture? Are there similarities in the creative processes of artists and scientists? Can science benefit from art? And can considering these questions bring us any closer to understanding creativity? This exhibition is a step towards exploring these key issues of the 21st century. GV Art gallery is a hub for collaborations between artists and scientists for exhibitions and discussions. Professor Arthur I. Miller, co-curator and chair of the panels, will lead discussions in the gallery exploring the issues raised. The artists in the exhibition will also discuss with the audience to further the debate. Arthur I. Miller is the author of ‘Einstein, Picasso’ among many other books, and is working on a new book, tentatively titled ‘The Creative Revolution’, investigating the new field of science-inspired art.

GV Art is a contemporary art gallery which aims to explore and acknowledge the inter-relationship between art and science, and how the areas cross over and inform one another. The gallery produces exhibitions and events that create a dialogue focused on how modern man interprets and understands the advances in both areas and how an overlap in the technological and the creative, the medical and the historical are paving the way for new aesthetic sensibilities to develop.
